Save $ with proper insulation

The Department of Energy estimates that a properly insulated attic can shave 10 to 50 percent off your heating bill. Sure, you can dial down the thermostat and get used to wearing bulky sweaters indoors to cut costs. But if you've got an unfinished attic, giving it proper insulation is one of the simplest ways to keep a lid on your heating bill this season. "It's a DIY project you can tackle in a weekend, and the savings you'll get add up every year," says general contractor Tom Silva.

Insulation levels are specified by R-Value. R-Value is a measure of insulation’s ability to resist heat traveling through it. The higher the R-Value the better the thermal performance of the insulation. Attics in this area are recommended to have a minimum of a R-38 Value. Energy Star recommends even more. Most attics I see do not even have the minimum recommended level and the one pictured actually has no insulation at some points. Bottom line, proper insulation equals lower heating costs.
